At least 12 people have been killed and over 40 injured after a Russian strike targeted a large hardware store in Kharkiv, officials report. The attack on Saturday comes as Russian forces advance in northeastern Ukraine, having crossed the border earlier this month and opened a new front in the two-year conflict. The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office has updated the injury count to at least 43. Officials also noted that nearly 200 people were inside the building at the time of the strike.
“The air raid siren went off, and about 100 people evacuated the building, but some remained inside,” said Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv regional military administration, on national television Saturday. “Specialised services are responding to the scene, and all injured are receiving assistance,” Syniehubov noted, adding there are no military targets nearby. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike as a “brutal attack” on X. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko highlighted that “significant amounts of flammable materials” inside the store are complicating firefighting efforts and warned of the fire potentially spreading to nearby warehouses amid the threat of further shelling.
Seven people were killed in Russian strikes on the city Thursday, targeting locations including a printing house. Following Saturday’s attack, Zelensky emphasised that “if Ukraine had enough air defence systems and modern combat aircraft, such Russian strikes would have been impossible.” “We are appealing to all leaders and states: we need a significant strengthening of air defence,” he said. Meanwhile, at least two people were killed and 10 injured in a Ukrainian strike on a Russian village in the Belgorod region, according to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. An 8-year-old boy was among the injured, with all victims sustaining shrapnel wounds. The strike caused a fire in a private residential building and damaged around 20 other buildings and 23 cars. “All operational services are working on site,” Gladkov said.
