The ceremony will be held on Friday at Nagasaki Peace Park, with diplomats from over 100 countries observing a minute of silence to commemorate the 1945 atomic bombing. Nagasaki Mayor Shiro Suzuki cited security concerns for Israel’s exclusion, despite warnings from Western nations that it could affect their ambassadors’ attendance. In response, Britain, Germany, and Italy have also decided not to send their ambassadors. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki led to Japan’s surrender in World War II, killing tens of thousands and prompting annual memorials advocating for global peace and nuclear disarmament. Nagasaki’s stance differs from Hiroshima, which included the Israeli ambassador in its ceremony earlier this week, despite protests.
Activists and bomb survivor groups pressured both cities to exclude Israel due to its actions in Gaza, where many Palestinians have died since Israel targeted Hamas after the October 7 attack. Russia and Belarus were already excluded over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, and campaigners hoped Israel would be similarly barred. A US embassy spokesperson told CNN that the ambassador wrote to the Nagasaki mayor, criticising the decision as political and stating he had no choice but to withdraw from the ceremony. “He will attend a peace ceremony at Zojoji Temple in Tokyo and observe a moment of silence at the embassy,” the spokesperson said. Other US consulates in Japan were instructed to do the same. The US will be represented at Nagasaki by the Principal Officer of Consulate Fukuoka. In a CNN interview, Cohen accused the Nagasaki mayor of “inventing” security concerns and politicising the ceremony.
On Thursday, Mayor Suzuki stressed that the decision wasn’t political and expressed regret over the US ambassador’s absence. “This was done to prevent any incidents and ensure a peaceful, solemn ceremony,” he told reporters. “If it were political, we should invite countries in conflict, but the impact on the ceremony prevents us from doing so. He added that authorities would continue to explain the situation to gain understanding. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi noted that while the foreign ministry advised Nagasaki, local authorities made the final decisions.
