A helicopter involved in an ‘unauthorised flight’ has crashed onto the roof of an Australian hotel, resulting in the death of the pilot.
Authorities are still working to identify the helicopter pilot who died when the aircraft struck a luxury hotel and erupted into flames during an “unauthorised flight” early Monday in Cairns, Australia. Hundreds of guests and staff at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel were evacuated after the helicopter crashed into the building near the Cairns Esplanade, a popular waterfront boardwalk in the northern Queensland city. Two holidaymakers, who were asleep in a top-floor room at the time, were taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to officials. The helicopter ignited upon impact, and images revealed damage to several windows.
Queensland Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Shane Holmes stated that the pilot had undertaken “an unauthorised flight,” but declined to comment on whether the helicopter had been stolen or if the crash was intentional, noting that all lines of inquiry remained open. On Monday, charter company Nautilus Aviation announced it was cooperating with officials as they investigate the “unauthorised use” of one of its aircraft. Angus Mitchell, Chief Commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), mentioned that investigators believe the helicopter departed from the general aviation hangar at Cairns Airport, approximately 5 kilometres (3 miles) from the hotel. In a statement, police said they received reports of the crash at 1:50 a.m., which resulted in a fire on the roof of the building. The hotel was evacuated, and police noted that the guests “looked stunned” as they exited the premises.
Videos show flames and smoke rising from the hotel roof, with sirens in the background. The pilot, who was alone in the helicopter, was declared dead at the scene, police confirmed. Knight noted that the helicopter flew over trees and a taller building before crashing into the seven-story hotel. “The pilot would have known those buildings were there,” Knight said, adding that it passed a taller building before hitting a lower one. DoubleTree by Hilton Cairns stated that all guests—421 adults, 50 children, and two staff—were safely evacuated. The hotel is working with authorities and arranged alternative accommodation. Police set up an exclusion zone and advised the public to stay away. The forensic crash unit and ATSB are investigating, with the ATSB asking witnesses with photos or videos to contact them through their website.
