Thousands of doctors across India have gone on strike, demanding improved protection for health workers following the rape and murder of a trainee medic in eastern West Bengal state. The body of the resident doctor was discovered last Friday in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, showing multiple injuries and signs of sexual assault, according to local police. One suspect has been arrested. On Monday, medical associations from various states called for doctors at government hospitals to halt all elective services indefinitely, urging that the case be expedited through the courts and that a protective committee for health workers be established.
“About 300,000 doctors across India have joined the protest, with more expected to follow tomorrow,” said Dr. Sarvesh Pandey, general secretary of the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA). In Kolkata and Delhi, doctors held signs saying: “Save our doctors, save our future,” while Hyderabad saw a candlelight vigil. The protests also highlighted ongoing violence and threats against health workers. A 2015 Indian Medical Association survey found 75% of doctors had faced violence. The association, in a letter to the health minister posted on X, called for an investigation into working conditions and a thorough probe into the recent murder of the trainee medic.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock over the trainee doctor’s murder and supported calls for the case to be expedited. India has faced ongoing issues with violence against women, with 31,516 rape cases reported in 2022, averaging 86 per day. Experts believe this number may be significantly underreported due to societal stigma. The 2012 gang-rape of a medical student in New Delhi led to legal reforms expanding the definition of rape and increasing penalties. Despite these changes, rape remains widespread, with critics arguing that the government has not done enough to protect women and punish perpetrators.
