Five human skeletons, devoid of hands and feet, were discovered outside the residence of Nazi official Hermann Göring.
Archaeologists excavated the skeletons of five individuals, lacking hands and feet, at a previous Nazi military installation in Poland. Uncovered at the Wolf’s Lair, a Nazi command centre in Gierloz, northeastern Poland, the discovery followed the finding of a human skull fragment during a dig on February 24, prompting local authorities to initiate additional excavations. The Latebra Foundation, a historical group based in Gdansk, Poland, revealed that the remains included three adults, a teenager, and a newborn, in a statement released on Thursday.
The five corpses were positioned close to each other, all oriented in the same direction, outside the residence of Nazi commander Hermann Göring. Göring, a distinguished World War I fighter pilot who ascended to become a prominent Nazi figure in World War II and a confidant of Adolf Hitler, occupied the house. Adjacent to the bodies were charred planks and remnants of sewage infrastructure. However, there were no indications of clothing present, as stated. Adrian Kostrzewa, a member of the foundation’s board of directors, informed CNN that the team initially presumed they were excavating an antiquated restroom upon encountering underground pipes. Their discovery took a twist with the uncovering of ashes and a burnt key before the skull fragment.
Pending a police investigation, numerous questions linger. Radiocarbon dating is pivotal for further analysis, as stated by a foundation representative. Situated deep in the northeastern Polish forests, the Wolf’s Lair served as the expansive Eastern Front Nazi headquarters. It stood as one of Europe’s largest such bases, housing Hitler for nearly three years. The site gained notoriety for Operation Valkyrie’s failed assassination attempt on Hitler in July 1944. Destroyed in January 1945 to thwart Soviet capture, the fortress’s significance lies in its fortified Third Reich history.
