The World Food Programme has suspended operations in Gaza following multiple instances of gunfire targeting an aid vehicle.
The World Food Programme (WFP) is halting staff movement in Gaza after one of its vehicles was hit by repeated gunfire near an Israeli checkpoint, according to the agency. The armoured vehicle, returning from a mission, sustained multiple bullet hits, though no employees were injured. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) is reviewing the incident. The WFP, the UN’s main food relief agency, is a key part of the humanitarian aid effort in Gaza, where famine has been worsening for months.
Ongoing airstrikes and repeated evacuation orders from Israeli forces have forced many of the WFP’s food warehouses and community kitchens to close. The IDF-designated “humanitarian zone” in Gaza has also shrunk by 38% in the past month, now covering just over a tenth of Gaza’s total area, according to CNN. Humanitarian workers usually coordinate their routes with Israeli forces for safety, but “the current deconfliction system is failing, and this cannot continue,” said WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain. In April, despite coordinating with Israeli authorities, aid workers from the World Central Kitchen were killed in an Israeli attack in Gaza, with airstrikes hitting their convoy and killing seven people.
During a Wednesday press briefing, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that the WFP aid vehicle shot in Gaza was clearly marked, with the WFP logo being “one of the most recognisable in conflict zones.” The UN has formally protested to Israel, stressing that member states must protect UN aid workers operating in dangerous areas. Pressure is mounting on Hamas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to secure a ceasefire and hostage release amid severe starvation, water shortages, and mass displacement in Gaza. Israel’s military campaign has killed at least 40,435 Palestinians and injured 93,534, following Hamas’s October 7 attack on southern Israel, which killed around 1,200 people and led to over 250 abductions.
