Seoul reports that South Korea fired warning shots following an accidental border crossing by North Korean troops.
On Sunday, South Korean forces fired warning shots after North Korean troops accidentally crossed the shared border, according to Seoul’s military. Tensions persist on the Korean Peninsula following a series of back-and-forth exchanges between the two sides. During a news briefing on Tuesday, the South Korean military seemed to play down the significance of the gunfire. They stated that the North Korean soldiers swiftly retreated and showed no signs of intending to invade the southern side, based on classified information. Colonel Lee Sung-jun, spokesperson for South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated, “There were no unusual movements other than the North Korean army immediately moving north after our warning shots. The South Korean military is closely monitoring the movements of the North Korean military and taking necessary measures.”
The incident report emerges amidst increased tensions following the landing of hundreds of trash-filled balloons from the North in the South and the resumption of loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts by the Seoul government across the border. Late Sunday, Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, cautioned that the resumption of loudspeaker broadcasts was “a prelude to a very dangerous situation.” She warned that South Korea would face an unspecified “new counteraction” from the North if it persisted with the broadcasts.
The 160-mile demilitarised zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea is heavily fortified with high fences and landmines, and largely devoid of human activity. Sunday’s incident marked the first gunfire within the DMZ since 2020, according to Lee, the Joint Chiefs spokesperson. North Korean troops retreated across the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) after the warnings, with no shots crossing into the North Korean side. Lee noted the thick forests in the DMZ, where MDL markers are often obscured. About 20 North Korean troops were involved, but the South Korean military did not disclose the number of warning shots fired or how many crossed the MDL.
