First American Pope Inaugurated in Grand Ceremony, Calls for Peace and Unity

Pope Leo XIV was solemnly installed at St. Peter’s Square before more than 200,000 faithful and dozens of world leaders—including President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He used the occasion to plead for peace in global conflict zones and to emphasize the Church’s mission of fostering unity and welcoming people of all backgrounds.

“In Gaza, surviving children, the elderly, and families are suffering from hunger.”
“In Myanmar, renewed conflict is claiming innocent lives.”
“Ukraine still awaits negotiations for a just and lasting peace.”

In his homily, Pope Leo—born Robert Francis Prevost—addressed the threats posed by artificial intelligence and reiterated his call to end the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

Dressed in traditional white papal vestments, the Pope arrived in the Popemobile to warm applause. He smiled and waved as he circled the square, visibly moved by the ceremony’s solemnity.

The two-hour Mass featured the presentation of three symbolic papal insignia:

• The Pallium, symbolizing his role as shepherd of the Church

• The Fisherman’s Ring, signifying his authority as Saint Peter’s successor

• The Book of the Gospels, reflecting his mission to spread Christ’s teachings

This inauguration marked the close of a transformative period for the Vatican, beginning with the death of Pope Francis on April 21, followed by his funeral and the conclave that elected Leo XIV on May 8—heralded by white smoke over the Sistine Chapel.
