Two dead and several trapped after hotel collapse in Germany.
Two people have died and several others remain trapped after a hotel collapsed in Kröv, a village in the heart of Germany’s Mosel wine-growing region. According to a fire department spokesperson, there were 14 people in the building at the time of the collapse. Trier Police reported at a Wednesday news conference that a man and a woman have died, with one body still unrecovered, and three people are trapped.
The trapped individuals have been able to contact the police by phone, allowing authorities to determine their locations and conditions within the building. Although the structure is still partially intact, it is shifting by 4 millimetres (0.16 inches) per hour, complicating rescue efforts. Due to the collapse of the hotel’s ceilings, police are using a core drill from above to try and reach the people in the rubble.
Approximately 250 firefighters, paramedics, police officers, and technical relief workers, including special forces, rescue dog teams, and drone units, are on site. The cause of the collapse remains unknown, according to the police. The lower part of the building dates back to the 17th century, while the two upper floors were added in 1980, as stated by Trier Police. Construction work was ongoing until Tuesday, and three nearby houses have been evacuated.
