During a meeting in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasised to his American counterpart, Antony Blinken, the crucial choice facing both nations: between stability and a “downward spiral.” Blinken’s second visit within a year underscores efforts to improve communication and stabilise strained relations, amid complex issues like China’s support for Russia and tensions in the South China Sea and Taiwan. Wang stressed the significance of the path chosen by China and the US, as it tests their sincerity and capabilities. The dialogue took place at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, following Wang’s observation that US-China relations were “beginning to stabilise.”
“Should our two sides lead global cooperation for mutual benefit, or engage in rivalry and risk conflict?” Wang queried, speaking through an interpreter. His comments coincide with Chinese officials’ discontent over US actions perceived as hindering China’s progress. On Wednesday, President Biden signed legislation potentially banning TikTok unless its Chinese parent company sells it, a move criticised by Beijing. Blinken emphasised the “shared responsibility” to clarify differences and avoid misunderstandings. The visit follows a summit between Biden and Xi in November, indicating a desire to manage relations. Officials suggested the trip would focus on communication and relationship management.
The discussions are set to address areas of contention. Blinken plans to raise concerns over China’s support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine and encourage China to use its influence with Iran to promote stability in the Middle East. Chinese officials have emphasised their constructive role in global issues and expect reciprocal action from the US. Wang is likely to emphasise China’s “red lines,” particularly regarding Taiwan. China claims Taiwan as its territory and has increased military pressure on the island. Wang urged the US to respect China’s core interests and refrain from interference in its internal affairs.
