A fire at a lithium battery factory in South Korea on Monday killed at least 22 people, mostly foreign nationals, local officials reported. The blaze began around 10:31 a.m. local time at an Aricell battery facility in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, about 50 kilometres southwest of Seoul. It was extinguished by 3:10 p.m., enabling firefighters to enter the factory, said Kim Jin-young, an official from the Hwaseong Fire Department. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol ordered emergency services to mobilise all available resources for rescue efforts. Lithium-ion batteries, common in electronics and vehicles, can pose significant risks due to their flammable materials.
Among the deceased, two were Koreans and 20 were foreigners, most of whom were Chinese nationals, Kim mentioned in a subsequent briefing. Kim stated that rescue workers recovered several burned bodies, and one individual died from cardiac arrest. At least two people sustained serious burns, and five suffered minor injuries. The factory’s worker directory was destroyed in the fire, complicating the process of identifying the victims, Kim added.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol instructed the Interior and Safety Ministry and the fire department chief to “make all-out efforts” in rescuing people by “mobilising all available personnel and equipment.” Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in laptops, cameras, smartphones, and electric vehicles, pose risks due to manufacturer defects, misuse, and ageing. These batteries contain flammable materials, which can increase the danger.
