9 Japan alleges that a Chinese military aircraft has intruded into its territorial airspace for the first time.
Japan reported that a Chinese military intelligence aircraft entered its territorial airspace near remote East China Sea islands on Monday, marking the first such accusation against the People’s Liberation Army Air Force. The Japanese Defence Ministry stated that the Y-9 reconnaissance plane briefly crossed into the airspace near the Danjo Islands for about two minutes. In response, Japan scrambled fighter jets, though no confrontation occurred. The Japanese Foreign Ministry summoned the Chinese Embassy’s chargé d’affaires to lodge a strong protest and demand prevention of future incidents.
The uninhabited Danjo Islands, a Japanese national monument and wildlife protection area, are located about 100 miles (160 kilometres) southwest of Nagasaki in the East China Sea. This incident marks the first reported violation of Japanese airspace by a Chinese military aircraft, though similar incursions have occurred around the disputed Senkaku Islands, claimed by both Japan and China. In 2012, a Chinese surveillance plane entered Senkaku airspace, and in 2017, a drone from a China Coast Guard vessel did the same. This week’s incident is the first involving a military aircraft. The Senkaku Islands have long been a flashpoint in Japan-China relations, with both nations asserting sovereignty over the territory.
Tensions escalated in 2012 when Tokyo purchased some of the disputed islands from a private Japanese owner, a move Beijing saw as a direct challenge to its sovereignty claims. Since then, China has frequently sent Coast Guard and other government vessels to the waters around the islands to assert its claims, including maintaining a Chinese presence near the islands for a record 158 consecutive days earlier this year, according to the Japanese government. Analysts warn that any incident between Japan and China in the Senkakus could risk a broader conflict, as Japan’s mutual defence treaty with the United States could come into play. Washington has repeatedly stated that the Senkakus fall under the protection of this treaty.
