ทศกาลศิลปะร่วมสมัยระดับโลก Bangkok Art Biennale 2024 หรือ BAB กำลังจะกลับมาสร้างความตื่นตาตื่นใจให้คนรักศิลปะทั่วโลกอีกครั้ง นำเสนอผลงานจากศิลปินผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิ 76 คน พร้อมคณะภัณฑารักษ์และที่ปรึกษาจากนานาชาติ ภายใต้ธีมอันทรงพลัง “Nurture Gaia” โดยงานจะจัดขึ้นตั้งแต่วันที่ 24 ตุลาคม 2567 ถึง 25 กุมภาพันธ์ 2568 เปลี่ยนกรุงเทพฯ ให้กลายเป็นศูนย์กลางศิลปะอันเต็มไปด้วยชีวิตชีวา และพร้อมเผยผลงานอันน่าทึ่งในสถานที่สำคัญ 11 แห่งทั่วเมือง
บางกอก อาร์ต เบียนนาเล่ เป็นเทศกาลศิลปะที่ใหญ่ที่สุดของประเทศไทยที่จัดขึ้นทุกสองปี โดยมีจุดประสงค์เพื่อเฉลิมฉลองความคิดสร้างสรรค์ ศิลปวัฒนธรรม และประวัติศาสตร์อันลึกซึ้งของกรุงเทพฯ ตลอดระยะเวลา 4 เดือนนี้ ศิลปินทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างชาติจะได้มีพื้นที่ในการนำเสนอผลงานผ่านสถานที่สำคัญที่มีชื่อเสียงและโดดเด่น รวมถึงวัดอันเงียบสงบที่เปี่ยมด้วยความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ผู้ชมจะได้ดื่มด่ำไปกับงานศิลป์ที่สะท้อนถึงความสัมพันธ์อันแนบแน่นระหว่างมนุษย์และธรรมชาติ
Nurture Gaia
ธีม “Nurture Gaia” ปีนี้ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจาก “ไกอา” เทพธิดาในตำนานกรีกโบราณที่เป็นตัวแทนของโลก ในตำนาน ไกอาได้รับการเคารพนับถือในฐานะมารดาผู้ให้ชีวิตและเลี้ยงดูสิ่งมีชีวิตทั้งมวล ตลอดประวัติศาสตร์ ไกอาถูกยกย่องให้เป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งความอุดมสมบูรณ์และความสมดุลของธรรมชาติ ปีนี้ BAB จะพาผู้ชมสำรวจจิตวิญญาณแห่งการดูแลและบำรุงรักษาของไกอา ผ่านการสะท้อนความเชื่อมโยงของชีวิต ธรรมชาติ และมนุษยชาติในยุคที่วิกฤตสิ่งแวดล้อมกลายเป็นประเด็นสำคัญระดับโลก
ธีมนี้ยังได้รับอิทธิพลจาก Gaia Hypothesis ซึ่งเสนอว่าโลกเป็นสิ่งมีชีวิตที่ทำหน้าที่สนับสนุนการดำรงอยู่ของชีวิตบนโลก การเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศ การแพร่ระบาดของโรค และการทำลายสิ่งแวดล้อมที่มนุษย์ก่อขึ้น ล้วนเป็นเหตุผลให้ BAB 2024 ต้องการกระตุ้นการไตร่ตรองถึงบทบาทของมนุษยชาติในการรักษาและให้เกียรติไกอา บรรดานักคิดสำคัญ เช่น ดาไลลามะ และ เจมส์ เลิฟล็อก นักสิ่งแวดล้อมชื่อดัง ได้เตือนว่าการแสวงหาผลประโยชน์จากทรัพยากรของโลกอย่างไม่ใส่ใจจะนำมาซึ่งหายนะ เทศกาลนี้จึงต้องการสร้างความตระหนักรู้ถึงความจำเป็นในการดำเนินการเพื่อแก้ไขปัญหานี้ผ่านงานศิลปะร่วมสมัย

นับตั้งแต่เริ่มจัดงาน Bangkok Art Biennale ได้รับความสนใจไม่เพียงแต่จากการจัดแสดงในสถานที่จริงเท่านั้น แต่ยังได้ขยายสู่แพลตฟอร์มเสมือนจริงอีกด้วย ในปี 2563 BAB ได้ขยายไปยังโลกออนไลน์เพื่อให้คนทั่วโลกได้เข้าชมนิทรรศการแบบเสมือนจริง โดยในงาน 2024 BAB ยังคงเดินหน้าสร้างประสบการณ์เสมือนจริงผ่านกิจกรรมหลากหลายทั้งการประชุมเชิงวิชาการ การเสวนาเชิงลึก การอบรมเชิงปฏิบัติการ ตลอดจนทัวร์นำชมที่คัดสรรอย่างพิถีพิถัน
ด้วยโปรแกรมที่หลากหลายและความมุ่งมั่นในการนำเสนอประเด็นปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมอันเร่งด่วน เทศกาล Bangkok Art Biennale 2024 จะกลายเป็นเหตุการณ์ทางวัฒนธรรมครั้งสำคัญที่ผสมผสานระหว่างศิลปะกับการรณรงค์เพื่อสร้างแรงบันดาลใจและสะท้อนความคิด

The Bangkok Art Biennale 2024 (BAB) is set to captivate art lovers from around the globe, bringing together 76 talented artists, visionary curators, and international advisors under the inspiring theme, “Nurture Gaia.” This year’s event, taking place from October 24, 2024, to February 25, 2025, will transform the bustling Thai capital into a vibrant art hub, showcasing stunning works at 11 iconic venues throughout Bangkok.
BAB is Thailand’s premier biennial art festival, known for celebrating the intersection of creativity, culture, and the city’s rich history. The festival spans four months, providing both local and international artists a platform to share their work in some of Bangkok’s most renowned arts and cultural spaces, historical landmarks, and even within the serene confines of its temples. Visitors can expect to immerse themselves in an array of artworks that reflect on the symbiotic relationship between humanity and the natural world.
Nurture Gaia: The Theme
The 2024 theme, “Nurture Gaia,” draws inspiration from Gaia, the ancient Greek goddess personifying Earth. In mythology, Gaia is revered as a life-giving mother who nurtures all living beings. Throughout history and across cultures, Gaia has been symbolized as a powerful force linked to fertility, agriculture, and the balance of nature. This year’s BAB delves into Gaia’s nurturing spirit, exploring the interconnectedness of life, nature, and humanity in a time of environmental crisis.
The theme is also influenced by the Gaia Hypothesis, which proposes that Earth functions as a living organism that sustains life. With issues like climate change, pandemics, and environmental degradation threatening the planet, the exhibition urges a critical reflection on humanity’s role in preserving and respecting Gaia. Prominent voices in this discourse, including Dalai Lama and environmentalist James Lovelock, have warned that the exploitation of Earth’s resources by humans is leading to catastrophic consequences. BAB 2024 aims to raise awareness of this urgent need for action through the lens of contemporary art.
