Filipino American Chelsea Manalo made history on Wednesday as the first Black woman to be crowned Miss Universe Philippines. Born to a Filipino mother and African American father, the 24-year-old’s victory was widely celebrated on social media for challenging the traditional beauty standards in the country. “Chelsea’s win challenges our ingrained preference for Eurocentric features and lighter complexions,” one user commented on an Instagram post from the official Miss Universe Philippines account. Another wrote, “Filipino beauty standard shattered into pieces.”
Representing Bulacan, a province north of Manila, Manalo triumphed over 52 other contestants from across the archipelago and overseas. The competition took place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay. As the competition narrowed to the top five finalists, Manalo was asked on stage how she would use her beauty and confidence to empower others. “As a woman of colour, I have always faced challenges. I was told that beauty has standards,” she said. “Because of this, I am already influencing many women who are watching me right now,” she said, looking out at the packed arena.
Manalo’s victory sparks a broader discussion on diversifying beauty standards in the Philippines, a country influenced by Western ideals due to its colonial past. Lighter-skinned actors and models dominate TV shows, movies, and fashion campaigns, and skin lightening products are widespread. Manalo will represent the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico in September. She aims to secure the country’s fifth Miss Universe title, following Gloria Diaz (1969), Margie Moran (1973), Pia Wurtzbach (2015), and Catriona Gray (2018). Over 100 countries will compete in Miss Universe 2024, which has removed the upper age limit for contestants. The Miss Universe organisation recently faced scrutiny as the parent company of Miss USA, with both Miss USA and Miss Teen USA resigning in May amid allegations of mismanagement and a toxic work environment.
