Fiji’s former long-serving prime minister, Frank Bainimarama, aged 70, has been handed a one-year prison sentence for impeding a police inquiry into corruption. Bainimarama, a prominent figure in the Pacific Islands, governed Fiji for over 15 years until his electoral defeat in 2022. Internationally, he gained recognition for his advocacy on behalf of vulnerable Pacific nations in addressing climate change. Last month, he was found guilty of influencing a former police commissioner to halt a fraud investigation at the University of South Pacific.
Bainimarama entered a plea of not guilty to the charges, yet in April, a court determined that both he and the police chief, Sitiveni Qiliho, had abused their authority to obstruct the investigation at the University of South Pacific. Initially, Bainimarama escaped jail time last month when a lower court magistrate chose not to formally record his conviction. However, Fiji’s top prosecutors appealed this decision. On Thursday, the country’s high court overturned the lower court’s ruling and sentenced both individuals to prison. Qiliho, suspended from his role, received a two-year term. Bainimarama’s supporters had assembled to hear the verdict outside the courthouse, while government officials appealed this decision.. Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube emphasised that the case showed everyone, regardless of status, is accountable under the law.
Observers of politics have highlighted the timing of the criminal cases filed against Bainimarama. After narrowly losing the December 2022 election to current Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Bainimarama has faced multiple allegations of political misconduct. Last year, as an opposition leader, Bainimarama was suspended from parliament for three years following a critical speech about the new government. Despite the accusations, his party FijiFirst remains supportive. Party senior Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum stated, “Bainimarama will continue to lead the FijiFirst party. We’ll address this in 2026.” Bainimarama, a former military commander, initially took power in Fiji through a bloodless coup in 2006 and was subsequently elected in democratic elections in 2014 and 2018.
