Mondo Duplantis is among the greatest athletes of this generation, a fact evident almost every time he steps onto the runway and the Paris Olympic Games were no exception. It was the final act of a sweltering evening in Paris’ Stade de France on Monday, with Duplantis once again underlining his dominance in the event by breaking the record for the ninth time in his career.
After failing his first two attempts at the world record, Duplantis cleared the bar on his third try, then ran to the stands to embrace his family. He had already secured the gold medal, successfully defending his title from the Tokyo Olympics and adding to his three world championship titles. Most competitors had already been eliminated when he began, passing on several early heights. After clearing 6.10m on his first attempt and taking the Olympic record from Brazil’s Thiago Braz, Duplantis captivated the stadium with a shot at the world record. Missing the bar on his first two attempts, he cleared it on his third – a thrilling finish to his gold medal win. Duplantis’ success has been years in the making, starting at age three when his parents set up a pole vault in their Louisiana backyard.
His father, Greg, was a professional pole vaulter for the United States, while his mother, Helena, competed in the heptathlon for Sweden. Both coach him and have been instrumental in his success. Although raised in the US, Duplantis chose to compete internationally for Sweden. Since first breaking the world record in February 2020, Duplantis has consistently pushed his boundaries. His latest record was set in Xiamen, China, three-and-a-half months ago, and he previously told CNN, “I have higher heights in me.” He continues to improve his world record, one centimetre at a time. On Monday, he lapped the track with a Swedish flag as the stadium emptied, still soaking in the moment. It’s only a matter of time before he sets another world record.
