Allegations of sexual abuse involving Indian MP Prajwal Revanna have stirred outrage in Karnataka, where thousands of videos purportedly depict the assaults. Police are probing claims against Revanna, who allegedly assaulted multiple women. Revanna has not addressed the accusations, though his office denied them, claiming the videos were manipulated. A member of the Janata Dal (Secular), Revanna is affiliated with PM Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. His father, HD Revanna, also faces accusations in a police complaint filed by a former family employee, which he dismissed as politically motivated.
On Monday, the JD(S) suspended Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Indian Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda. Karnataka’s Chief Minister announced a special investigation team (SIT) would probe allegations against Revanna, prompted by the state’s women’s commission. The accusations emerged last June, but media reporting was halted by a court order. However, days before the April 26 election in Hassan, pen drives allegedly containing incriminating footage circulated widely. “One woman, identified as a cousin of Mr. Revanna’s mother, spoke to the BBC, describing the disturbing content of the videos. She recounted a specific instance where a woman pleaded for mercy. The woman herself filed a police complaint alleging sexual abuse by the MP and his father.”
Accusations against Prajwal Revanna include alleged abuse of the woman’s daughter, with his father implicated in stalking and intimidation. While reports suggest Prajwal Revanna has left for Germany, his father denies this, asserting readiness for investigation. The case has sparked political upheaval in Karnataka, with questions raised about allowing someone facing such serious allegations to leave without inquiry. A state minister called on PM Modi to explain why the alliance nominated Revanna despite the accusations. In December, local BJP leader G Devaraje Gowda urged the state leadership not to field Prajwal Revanna due to the videos. A BJP spokesperson stated it’s up to the party. JD(S) has distanced itself, with HD Kumaraswamy calling them an “embarrassment to society.”
