Virginie Viard is stepping down as Chanel’s artistic director of fashion collections after five years with the French luxury house.
On Wednesday night, Chanel issued a brief statement confirming the departure of 62-year-old Virginie Viard. The statement highlighted her “rich collaboration of five years as artistic director of fashion collections,” during which she successfully renewed the house’s codes while honouring Chanel’s creative heritage. Viard’s tenure with Chanel spanned almost 30 years. A successor has not yet been named, but the brand stated that an announcement will be made “in due course.” The designer assumed the role following Karl Lagerfeld’s death in 2019, having worked alongside him at Chanel for decades. She occupied one of the most prestigious and sought-after positions in fashion, with only Lagerfeld and Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel herself serving as previous artistic directors for the iconic brand.
Viard began her career at Chanel as an intern in 1987 and eventually became Karl Lagerfeld’s deputy for decades. Their close working relationship led Lagerfeld to describe her as “my right arm and my left arm.” Viard’s appointment in 2019 was anticipated, with Chanel emphasising that the decision was made “so that the legacy of Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld can live on.” Speculation about who will step into the role next is expected to be intense in the coming weeks. This news comes amid a series of high-profile shifts within the fashion industry. In March, Pierpaolo Piccioli left Valentino after eight years as creative director, with Alessandro Michele, formerly of Gucci, taking over the position. Additionally, British designer Sarah Burton stepped down from Alexander McQueen in September last year.
