Hundreds of climate protesters clashed with police in Germany as they tried to access the Tesla factory near Berlin. The demonstration, held on Friday, aimed to oppose the proposed expansion of Tesla’s only European plant, resulting in several injuries, including three police officers. Authorities made numerous arrests and prevented activists from entering the facility. Since February, campaigners have been occupying woods in Grünheide, Brandenburg, arguing that Tesla’s expansion plans would harm the environment. Protesters blocked a nearby motorway and disrupted railway services by occupying tracks. Additionally, they staged a sit-in on a country road near the factory.
Videos circulating on social media depict hundreds of individuals, many adorned in blue caps and waving blue flags, rushing toward the site in an attempt to gain entry. One video, authenticated by the BBC, captures protesters breaching the police cordon and entering the factory premises, situated approximately 30 km (18 miles) from the capital. The demonstrators are observed heading toward an outlying building at the northeast corner of the Gigafactory grounds. Although police confirmed that attempts to access the facility were thwarted, with several individuals detained, the footage underscores the intensity of the confrontation.
Earlier this week, Tesla closed the site due to the demonstration, allowing employees to work remotely. Elon Musk said on social media that the group failed to breach the facility. The Disrupt Tesla group had called for mass protests opposing the expansion between May 8th and 12th. Spokesman Ole Becker aimed to highlight “environmental destruction” in Grünheide. Some activists occupied part of the forest slated for clearance for months. The Gigafactory employs about 12,000 people and produces roughly 500,000 cars annually. Production halted briefly in March due to a suspected arson attack by the far-left activist group Volcano Group.
