The first visit by a British royal to Ukraine since the onset of the Russian invasion has occurred.
Buckingham Palace announced that the Duchess of Edinburgh has made history as the first member of the British royal family to visit Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022. Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh and wife of Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh the youngest sibling of King Charles, embarked on her journey to Ukraine on Monday. Her visit aims to demonstrate support for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and torture, according to the palace. The duchess is renowned for her advocacy work, particularly championing the UK’s Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative and the United Nations’ Women, Peace, and Security Agenda.
According to Buckingham Palace, Sophie met survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and torture, as well as children separated from families by Russia. The Duchess of Edinburgh emphasised the bravery of survivors, stressing the importance of justice and support. She paid respects to Bucha’s victims, amid allegations of Russia’s use of sexual violence as a military tactic in Ukraine, as per the UN. Russia denies war crime allegations. Sophie underscored the need to prioritise survivors’ rights and voices in addressing conflict-related sexual violence. The Bucha suburb witnessed indiscriminate civilian deaths during Russia’s brief occupation at the war’s onset.
The Duchess also held discussions with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska regarding support for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and the pivotal role of women in ensuring Ukraine’s enduring recovery and reconstruction, as per Buckingham Palace. Sophie’s previous visits to countries such as Kosovo, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Colombia aimed to spotlight the impact of conflict on survivors. She listened to firsthand testimonies from those affected by conflict-related sexual violence. In March 2023, Prince William visited the Ukrainian-Polish border to meet British and Polish troops and gain insights into their collaborative efforts in aiding Ukraine.
