Adam Montgomery, convicted of murdering his 5-year-old daughter Harmony, received a 45-year to life sentence on Thursday (May 9). This case led to scrutiny of child protective services and strained relations between Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Found guilty of second-degree murder in Harmony’s 2019 death, reported missing in 2021, Montgomery also faced charges of assault, witness tampering, evidence falsification, and abuse of a corpse. Sentences included 45 years to life for murder, 4 to 8 years for assault, 3.5 to 7 years for tampering, and the same for evidence falsification. He received a 12-month suspended sentence for corpse abuse. The consecutive sentences total a minimum of 56 years.
Five years after the Massachusetts court’s decision to place Harmony, who faced foster care transitions, under Montgomery’s care in New Hampshire, the sentencing occurred, now under intense scrutiny. Harmony’s mother last spoke to her via FaceTime in spring 2019, losing contact thereafter. According to prosecutors, Montgomery fatally assaulted Harmony on December 7, 2019, then disposed of her body over three months, lying about her whereabouts for over two years. In 2022, the Massachusetts Office of the Child Advocate published a 101-page report criticising officials for prioritising parental rights over Harmony’s welfare. Legally declared dead in March, Harmony’s remains remain undiscovered.
In the two years post-Harmony’s murder, prosecutors alleged Montgomery falsely informed others, including law enforcement, that his daughter resided safely with her mother in Massachusetts. Montgomery then adopted a strategy of deflecting blame for Harmony’s injuries and death, according to the sentencing memo. Prosecutors claimed he fabricated a false narrative about Harmony’s fate and assaulted her stepmother, Kayla Montgomery, instructing her to adhere to the story. Kayla Montgomery pleaded guilty in 2022 to lying to a grand jury about her whereabouts when Harmony was last seen. She testified against her estranged husband in February and was paroled in March. Prosecutors argued in the sentencing memo that Montgomery’s “extensive” criminal history, including threatening a teenager with a knife and shooting someone during a robbery, should influence his sentence.
